Partners

The Isle Royale Institute currently consists of three contributing partners:

  • The National Park Service (NPS)
  • Michigan Tech University
  • University of Minnesota Duluth

Through this partnership, IRI has access to the complimentary resources provided by each of its members. In the future IRI may expand to include additional educational and research institutions as complimentary members. Additional “informal” partners are also critical to IRI’s success with individual projects.

Isle Royale National Park

The mission of Isle Royale National Park is to preserve and protect the land and water resources of the archipelago for present and future generations. The NPS provides IRI with its greatest asset—the park itself and access to its land, water, science, and cultural resources. National Park staff are invaluable to IRI’s success, assisting with educational programs, partnering in research, and providing critical logistical support.

Michigan Technological University

The mission of Michigan Tech is to prepare students to create the future. Michigan Tech not only houses the IRI office and provides critical administrative support, but also contributes the expertise of faculty, students, and researchers. Several of Michigan Tech’s research institutes and outreach programs, in additional to individual faculty members and students, are directly involved in IRI research and education programs, including:

The University of Minnesota Duluth

UMD serves northern Minnesota, the state, and the nation as a medium-sized comprehensive university dedicated to excellence in all its programs and operations. As a university community in which knowledge is sought as well as taught, its faculty recognizes the importance of scholarship and service, the intrinsic value of research, and the significance of a primary commitment to quality instruction.

Currently, the College of Education and Human Service Professions is most directly involved in IRI programs, in addition to individual faculty and students conducting research in the park. UMD departments and programs involved in IRI programs at this point include:
