New Director Hired

Kenneth J. Vrana has been hired as the new Director for the Isle Royale Institute.

Ken brings a diverse set of skills in scientific research, heritage education, and integrated resource management to the School and to Michigan Tech. He has an M.S. in Park, Recreation and Tourism Resources from Michigan State University.

Ken's academic studies focused on application of the social sciences in natural and cultural resource management, with specialties in freshwater/marine protected areas and Great Lakes/maritime studies.

His prior professional positions have been with Isle Royale National Park, National Park Service Southwest Regional Office, Michigan Sea Grant Extension, Michigan State University, and private sector consulting. Since 1994, Ken has assisted in the creation/development of an applied research and outreach center at Michigan State, and established a nonprofit corporation and a limited liability company to conduct projects in underwater research and undersea technology development. Ken looks forward to the opportunities and challenges of the Isle Royale Institute, and returning to the Copper Country!
